Item Integrating crop diversity, forage crops, and targeted grazing to manage Avena fatua L.(Montana State University - Bozeman, College of Agriculture, 2021) Wong, Mei-Ling; Chairperson, Graduate Committee: Fabian D. Seipel (co-chair)Wild oat (Avena fatua L.) is one of the most difficult weeds to manage in spring cereal crops and causes large economic losses throughout the Northern Great Plains. The continual use of herbicides for wild oat management has selected for herbicide resistant and multiple herbicide resistant biotypes and has left no selective herbicide options for farmers in small-grain fields. To sustain crop production, this thesis aimed to develop ecologically based practices to manage wild oat populations. We evaluated the impact of spring wheat height, seeding rate, crop type, forage termination method, and tillage on wild oat tiller density, biomass, and seed production. Two studies were conducted: (1) from 2017 through 2019 in Bozeman, Montana and (2) from 2018 through 2019 in Moccasin, Montana. The first study examined the combined effect of spring wheat height and seeding rate on its competitiveness against wild oat. We found that the tall near-isogenic wheat line did not have greater wild oat suppression than the short line. Spring wheat seeded at a higher than recommended rate reduced wild oat biomass and seed production only when nitrogen fertilizer was applied. The second study assessed management practices including integrating lentil, fall and spring forage mixture, sheep grazing and tilled fallow, in addition to spring wheat height and seeding rate. Forage mixtures, sheep grazing, and tillage were the most successful tactics in suppressing wild oat growth and seed production. However, wild oat suppression was not different between spring wheat and lentil, regardless of spring wheat height and seeding rate. Our results indicate that spring wheat height was not correlated with increased suppression of wild oat. A higher seeding rate of spring wheat also did not increase wild oat suppression; we suggest that fertilization may be needed to enhance crop competitiveness. Integrating forage crops with sheep grazing has the best potential to reduce the wild oat seed bank. This information can help redesign cropping systems. However, there is a continual need to develop other integrated weed management techniques to limit wild oat growth and seed production and to reduce reliance on herbicides.Item The effects of increasing crop diversity on populations of wheat stem sawfly (Cephus cinctus) and associated braconid parasitoids(Montana State University - Bozeman, College of Agriculture, 2019) Fischer, Benjamin Vernon; Chairperson, Graduate Committee: David K. WeaverWheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus (Norton) (WSS) is the most damaging pest of wheat in the Northern Great Plains. Insecticides are not widely used to control this insect, and cultural control methods provide inconsistent management of this pest. However, biological control by the parasitoids Bracon cephi (Gahan) and Bracon lissogaster Muesebeck has been shown to reduce damage caused by WSS. In addition, increased agroecosystem diversity has benefitted biological control agents in many other systems. Therefore, this study assessed the effect on populations of WSS and associated parasitoids by the inclusion of pulse and cover crops near wheat fields. Field trapping, dissection of postharvest crop residue, and rearing of insects out of crop residue were used to survey WSS and parasitoid populations in pairs of wheat fields throughout the major wheat producing regions of Montana. One wheat field in each pair was seeded next to a fallow field, and the other was seeded next to a field of either pulse or cover crop. Postharvest stem dissection samples show that wheat fields next to pulse or cover crops had a mean increase of 51 parasitoids per m 2 than wheat fields next to fallow. A corresponding 3% reduction in stem cutting was also observed in postharvest samples from wheat fields adjacent to flowering pulse or cover crops. Land-use data from CropScape TM were used as well to evaluate other land-use impacts around each wheat field such as wheat, fallow, grassland/pasture, flowering crops, and developed space. The regression equation Y = 18.96X + 6.08, where X = proportion of fallow land within 2 km of the wheat field and Y = square root of WSS abundance in a 7.5 m sample of crop residue from rows of wheat, can be used to predict WSS abundance in wheat fields. Replacing fallow fields with flowering pulse or cover crops in the Northern Great Plains may be an important integrated pest management tactic to reduce WSS damage. Cultural practices such as crop diversification are key to developing consistent biological control for WSS.Item Crop diversification and technology adoption : the role of market isolation in Ethiopia(Montana State University - Bozeman, College of Agriculture, 2010) Bittinger, Alison Kay; Chairperson, Graduate Committee: Vincent H. Smith.The supply of basic necessities, primarily food, in developing countries is an ongoing concern. A crucial component to improving this situation is access to information on the decision environment and behavior of smallholders in these countries. One challenge facing agricultural households is the lack of effective access for input and output markets. The markets that do exist often fail to facilitate efficient trade between buyers and sellers. Smallholders are forced to adjust their production behavior to compensate for this lack of market access. The purpose of this paper is to examine the crop diversification and technology adoption decisions made by households, in relation to their distance and, by implication, lack of access to a market center. This thesis uses a dataset that contains information on the production systems of Ethiopian smallholders in 2000/2001. The focus of the analysis is on the determinants of chemical fertilizer adoption, crop diversification levels, and crop choices. A simultaneous equation model is used to obtain estimates for the decisions to adopt chemical fertilizer and diversify crop mix in which the endogenous variables are truncated. In addition, a system of five OLS equations is used to explain the shares of land devoted to major categories of crops (primary staple crops; cereals/pulses; oils/spices; fruits/vegetables; and cash crops). The empirical results indicate that Ethiopian smallholders do react to changes in the level of market access by altering their production behavior.
