Abstract

This study explores the impact of integrating 3D printing into a high school biology classroom to enhance STEM connections and creativity. Students participated in three project-based learning units centered on designing and producing 3D-modeled biological artifacts. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through pre- and post-quizzes, Likert-style surveys, student interviews, and expert reviews. Findings indicate that despite reduced instructional class-time, students maintained academic performance and demonstrated higher engagement. In addition, students reported a deeper connection to biological content and increased confidence in 3D engineering within the classroom. Expert rubric review suggests that participating in 3D printing and the artifact design process enhanced student creativity and scientific thinking. These results suggest that artifact-based learning through 3D printing is an effective educational tool for promoting practical STEM skills without compromising core academic achievement.
