Effects of modified program systems on participation in outdoor education and cross-country skiing

Abstract

Outdoor Education programs provide various benefits and opportunities for growth to students, however, there can be challenges and barriers associated with participation for some audiences. This study aims to assess how prioritized registration and a transparent scholarship system effected participation of Title 1 and non-eligible Title 1 schools in Crosscut Mountain Sports Center's Ski Education Program in Bozeman, Montana. Data was collected through Registration and Scholarship Questions, surveys, and interviews. The results suggested that modified registration systems increased the number of Title 1 student participation as well the amount of scholarship funds requested and granted. This research also includes data from students and educators about the effects of participation and other ways to increase accessibility to the Ski Education Program. Pre- and post-student surveys as well as teacher interviews and instructor observations showed that students experienced various personal benefits as a result of participation in the outdoor education program.
