Abstract
Black students attending predominantly white institutions (PWIs) often navigate unique challenges that impact their academic, social, and personal experiences. This study explores the lived experiences of Black students at PWIs in the Intermountain West, a region where Black student populations are particularly small. Through qualitative, in-depth interviews, this research captures personal narratives that highlight themes of racial climate, sense of belonging, academic engagement, social integration, and institutional support. The study also incorporates the researcher’s own experiences to provide additional context and reflection. Findings reveal that Black students frequently encounter racial isolation, microaggressions, and a lack of culturally responsive support systems. Despite these challenges, many students develop resilience through peer networks, student organizations, and faculty mentorship. The study emphasizes the need for institutional changes, including enhanced diversity training for faculty, greater representation in curriculum, and stronger support structures for Black students. By amplifying student voices, this research aims to educate faculty, staff, and administrators on the realities of Black student experiences and encourage more effective teaching, mentoring, and policy initiatives. The study contributes to existing literature on racial equity in higher education and offers practical recommendations for fostering a more inclusive and supportive campus environment.
