| dc.description.abstract | Nurse preceptors play a critical role in supporting new graduate nurses' transition to competent clinical practice. Many nurse residency programs (NRPs) rely on clinically experienced nurses who lack formal preparation in clinical teaching, resulting in inconsistent training experiences and variable competency development among novice nurses. This quality improvement (QI) project addressed the absence of structured preceptor preparation in an acute care hospital in Montana. Guided by the Plan–Do–Study–Act (PDSA) framework, the project developed a unit-tailored, evidence-based nurse preceptor training curriculum to strengthen preceptor preparedness. The curriculum integrated key competencies in adult learning principles, communication, and leadership, nested within fundamental preceptor roles. Preceptor competency was evaluated using a self-assessment tool. Nurse leaders measured nurse retention rates while supporting project implementation. Key lessons demonstrated that clinical expertise alone does not ensure teaching competence. Effective preceptorship requires structured preparation, leadership support, and systematic evaluation. Structured preceptor training improved consistency in clinical teaching, enhanced transition-to-practice experiences for new graduate nurses, and supported workforce stability. The project highlighted the Clinical Nurse Leader’s essential role in quality clinical education. | |
