Item Bumble Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) of Montana(2017-09) Dolan, Amelia C.; Delphia, Casey M.; O'Neill, Kevin M.; Ivie, Michael A.Montana supports a diverse assemblage of bumble bees (Bombus Latreille) due to its size, landscape diversity, and location at the junction of known geographic ranges of North American species. We compiled the first inventory of Bombus species in Montana, using records from 25 natural history collections and labs engaged in bee research, collected over the past 125 years, as well as specimens collected specifically for this project during the summer of 2015. Over 12,000 records are included, with 28 species of Bombus now confirmed in the state. Based on information from nearby regions, four additional species are predicted to occur in Montana. Of the 28 species, Bombus bimaculatus Cresson and Bombus borealis Kirby are new state records. The presence of B. borealis was previously predicted, but the presence of B. bimaculatus in Montana represents a substantial extension of its previously reported range. Four additional \ eastern\" bumble bee species are recorded from the state, and three species pairs thought to replace one another from the eastern to western United States are now known to be sympatric in Montana. Additionally, our data are consistent with reported declines in populations of Bombus occidentalis Greene and Bombus suckleyi Greene, highlighting a need for targeted surveys of these two species in Montana."Item Colydiine genera (Coleoptera: Zopheridae: Colydiinae) of the new World: A Key and Nomenclatural Acts 30 Years in the Making(2016-12) Ivie, Michael A.; Lord, Nathan P.; Foley, Ian A.; Slipinski, S. AdamA brief review of the classification history of the subfamily Colydiinae is provided, followed by a provisional diagnosis for the group. The 47 genera of New World Colydiinae (Colydiidae auctorum) are reviewed, with an illustrated key to genera, a representative habitus of each genus, a list of all 305 described species currently considered valid, each placed into the appropriate recognized genus, with full citations for each. Numerous nomenclatural changes are noted. Opostirus Kirsch is transferred to the Tenebrionidae: Eudysantina, new placement. The Adimerini Sharp 1894 are synonymized with Synchitini Erichson, 1845, new synonymy. In the Acropini, Lemmis Pascoe, 1860 = Acropis Burmeister, 1840, new synonymy, with Acropis caelatus (Pascoe, 1860), new combination and Acropis tuberosus (Grouvelle, 1896), new combination. Acropis fryi Pascoe, 1860 = Acropis tuberculifera Burmeister, 1840, new synonymy and Acropis incensa Pascoe, 1860 = Acropis aspera Pascoe, 1860, new synonymy. In the Synchitini, Anisopaulax Reitter, 1877 = Lasconotus Erichson, 1845, new synonymy, with Lasconotus brucki (Reitter, 1877), new combination. Pristoderus brasiliensis (Grouvelle, 1896), new combination follows synonymization of Ulonotus Erichson with Pristoderus. Lastly, Endestes sculpturatus Sharp, 1894 = Endestes incilis Pascoe, 1863, new synonymy.Item The description of Prototrichalus gen. nov. and three new species from Burmese amber supports a mid-Cretaceous origin of the Metriorrhynchini (Coleoptera, Lycidae)(2020-07) Molino-Olmedo, Francisco; Ferreira, Vinicius S.; Branham, Marc A.; Ivie, Michael A.Despite the many substantial advances and progress in understanding the internal evolutionary relations of several Lycidae groups, the divergence time estimation of the family within Elateroidea remains subject of debate, with estimates to as early as the mid-Jurassic. Herein we describe Prototrichalus gen. nov., and three new species: Prototrichalus sepronai sp. nov., Prototrichalus meiyingae sp. nov. and Prototrichalus milleri sp. nov., from Burmese amber of the Cenomanian Age (mid-Cretaceous), supporting an age for the tribe of at least 100 Ma. The new taxa belong to the tribe Metriorrhynchini and are the oldest recognizable beetles from this lineage, indeed, among the oldest known representatives of the Lycidae. The discovery and description of Prototrichalus and its three species provides direct evidence of the group's as a recognizable group in the mid-Cretaceous, much earlier than the recent predictions in the Late Cretaceous.Item The First Fossil Species of the Extant Genus Cessator Kazantsev (Coleoptera: Lycidae): A New Leptolycini from Dominican Amber(2017-03) Ferreira, Vinicius S.; Ivie, Michael A.Cessator brodzinskyi Ferreira and Ivie, new species, is the third lycid species known from Dominican amber. Leptolycus parda Zaya, 1988 is moved to Cessator parda (Zayas), new combination.Item Reconstitution of some tribes and genera of Lagriinae (Coleoptera, Tenebrionidae)(Pensoft Publishers, 2023-07) Aalbu, Rolf L.; Kanda, Kojun; Merkl, Ottó; Ivie, Michael A.; Andrew Johnston, M.The tribes Goniaderini Lacordaire, 1859 and Lupropini Lesne, 1926 within the tenebrionid subfamily Lagriinae Latreille, 1825 have previously been shown to be non-monophyletic by molecular phylogenetic analyses. The tribes and constituent genera are here reviewed and redefined morphologically. As part of tribal redefinitions, we establish PrateiniNew Tribe with type genus Prateus LeConte, 1862. We reestablish the subtribe Phobeliina Ardoin, 1961 Revised Status, which is transferred from Goniaderini and placed as a subtribe of Lagriini Latreille, 1825 where it is comprised of Phobelius Blanchard, 1842, and Rhosaces Champion, 1889 (previously in Lagriini: Statirina Blanchard, 1845). The fossil tribe Archaeolupropini Nabozhenko, Perkovsky, & Nazarenko, 2023 is transferred from Lagriinae to Tetratomidae: Tetratominae Billberg, 1820. Keys to extant tribes and subtribes of Lagriinae and genera of Goniaderini, Lupropini, and Prateini are provided. Mimocellus Wasmann, 1904 is transferred from Lupropini to Tenebrionidae incertae sedis, and likely belongs in either Diaperinae or Stenochiinae.Item Redescription of Aporrhipis Pascoe, 1887 (Coleoptera: Lycidae), with a Discussion of its Tribal Placement(2018-06) Ferreira, Vinicius S.; Barclay, Maxwell V. L.; Ivie, Michael A.Aporrhipis flexilisPascoe, 1887 is the sole species of a monospecific genus of beetles from Brazil, originally described in the family Ripiphoridae. Despite the fact that this genus was moved to Lycidae, its correct tribal placement remains uncertain. In this study, A. flexilis is redescribed, its tribal placement is discussed, and it is tentatively placed within the Calopterini, Acroleptina. The problems of distinguishing the Acroleptina from the Leptolycini are highlighted by this case, and a plea is made for additional specimens to help resolve this conundrum.Item Redescription of Cephalolycus major Pic, 1926 (Coleoptera: Elateroidea: Lycidae) and a Discussion on Its Taxonomic Position(2016-09) Ferreira, Vinicius S.; Ivie, Michael A.In her revisionary work on the definition of the Calopterini, Bocákova (2003, 2005) was unable to see the type and sole known specimen of the Colombian species Cephalolycus major Pic, 1926, being forced to leave the monotypic Cephalolycus Pic, 1926 incertae sedis due to the lack of sufficient information in the original description. During the process of returning long-outstanding loans on behalf of a retired colleague as part of a donation of a large collection of cantharoids, we discovered a syntype of C. major, the type species (by monotypy) of Cephalolycus, from the Pic Collection of the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris (MNHN). As we return this loaned specimen, we take this opportunity to redescribe it.Item A Review of the Nearctic Genus Lucaina Dugès, 1879 (Coleoptera: Lycidae: Lycinae: Calochromini), with Descriptions of Two New Species(2018-09) Ferreira, Vinicius S.; Ivie, Michael A.A review of Lucaina Dugès, 1879 with illustrations of diagnostic characters, distribution maps, and an identification key to the species is presented. Macrolygistopterus bajacalifornicus (Zaragoza, 2003) is transferred to Lucaina bajacalifornica (Zaragoza, 2003), new combination. Lucaina greeni Ferreira and Ivie, new species and Lucaina milleri Ferreira and Ivie, new species are described. Lycinellaopaca Gorham, 1884 and Lycinellaparvula Gorham, 1884 are redescribed and illustrated. Six new species are described for the genus: Lycinellaadamantis sp. n., L.hansoni sp. n., L.milleri sp. n., L.cidaoi sp. n., L.marshalli sp. n. and L.pugliesae sp. n.. Lycinellahumeralis Pic, 1933 is moved to Ceratoprionhumerale (Pic, 1933), comb. n. A key to the species of Lycinella, illustrations and a distribution map is provided.Item A Revision of the Genus Diastolinus mulsant and rey (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae)(2016-09) Hart, Charles J.; Ivie, Michael A.The West Indian genus Diastolinus Mulsant and Rey, 1859 (type species: Blaps clathratus Fabricius) is revised. The genus now includes 18 species divided among three species-groups, eight of which are described as new species herein: Diastolinus chalumeaui Hart and Ivie, new species (Guadeloupe Archipelago); Diastolinus leewardensis Hart and Ivie, new species (Leeward Islands); Diastolinus shieli Hart and Ivie, new species (Redonda); Diastolinus azuaensis Hart and Ivie, new species (Hispaniola); Diastolinus desecheo Hart and Ivie, new species (Desecheo Island); Diastolinus doyeni Hart and Ivie, new species (Puerto Rico); Diastolinus vaderi Hart and Ivie, new species (Hispaniola); and Diastolinus hoppae Hart and Ivie, new species (St. Lucia). The following new synonymies are proposed: Diastolinus hummelincki Marcuzzi, 1962 = Diastolinus clavatus Mulsant and Rey, 1859, new synonymy; Diastolinus mulsanti Marcuzzi and D\'Aguilar, 1971 = Diastolinus clavatus Mulsant and Rey, 1859, new synonymy; and Diastolinus estebani Garrido, 2004 = Diastolinus coarctatus (Mulsant and Rey, 1859), new synonymy. A lectotype and paralectotypes are designated for Diastolinus hummelincki Marcuzzi, 1962 (not Marcuzzi, 1949 nor 1950), Blaps clathrata Fabricius, 1792, Ctesicles insularis Champion, 1896, and Ctesicles maritimus Champion, 1896. All species are keyed, illustrated, and redescribed, and extensive corrections of misidentifications are reviewed. All 18 species are readily distinguished by both morphological and biogeographical attributes. Newly revised distributions demonstrate that most species distributions can be closely tied to Pleistocene eustastic minima.
