Item M.S.U. Academy for Inter-disciplinary studies : a research/living facility(Montana State University - Bozeman, 1978) Sukut, Terral DeanItem Character(Montana State University - Bozeman, 1980) Goss, Bradley T.Item Therapeutic environments of dayrooms in adult psychiatric settings : an integrative literature review(Montana State University - Bozeman, College of Nursing, 2015) Francis, Teresa Whalen; Chairperson, Graduate Committee: Susan LuparellMental illness has plagued mankind since the beginning of time. It was not until the mid-1700s that scientific approaches were considered to ameliorate the suffering of the human psyche. Patients were hospitalized in asylums for the purpose of containment with little hope of recovery from mental illness. During the twentieth century, great advances were made in various therapeutic modalities such as psychoanalysis, psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology to treat mental disorders. Treatment was focused on recovery, and more successes in functionality were seen. Most psychiatric, inpatient units have a common area known as the dayroom where patients are able to commune with other patients. The purpose of this integrative literature review was to search for literature of best practices regarding the physical structure of therapeutic environments in psychiatric dayrooms. This integrative literature review was performed by searching four databases for articles on the therapeutic environments of dayrooms in adult inpatient psychiatric settings. A variety of search terms were developed and used in this exploration. The search resulted in zero articles found. This points to a gap in the literature and opens the field for research to be conducted on the environments of this important room in psychiatric inpatient units. A limitation of this literature review was that databases more specific to architecture and design were not searched and those might yield some results in the literature.Item Passive subversion : franchised city vs. found-object adaptability: a media beacon(Montana State University - Bozeman, College of Arts & Architecture, 2007) Quinn, Megan Ruth; Chairperson, Graduate Committee: Michael Everts"Television is a medium of entertainment which permits millions of people to listen to the same joke at the same time, and yet remain lonesome." -T.S. Elliot. Fifteen percent of the globe’s population is connected to the internet, 99% of Americans own a television and watch 250 billion hours of TV a year. Electronic media has formed a passive culture which is exposed to a plethora of information. This information affects political viewpoints, consumption habits, lifestyle choices, etc. Face to face encounters are dwindling due to the convenience and portable nature of these media. The media has a monopoly on the market of information, but a physical place can bring people together for the purpose of interacting with other people and exchanging information. Thesis statement: Mixing paths of varying intents subverts passive culture by creating opportunities for active cross-social events. Thesis Intent: Explore design opportunities which would proactively address our contemporary consumer culture. What can be done to regain the civic sense and lost condition of public space? What can be done to counteract the passive population, built environment, and the norm? The solution is not reliving the past, but creating something new which is relevant to contemporary society.Item A model for a human factors based design guidelines handbook for residential living environments for the elderly(Montana State University - Bozeman, College of Engineering, 2005) Pendergast, Brian Daniel; Chairperson, Graduate Committee: Robert J. MarleyThe elderly in America represent a significant and growing population. One relevant engineering aspect of an aging population is the suitability of residential environments for the independent-living elderly. Engineers, architects, and designers are increasingly involved in the design and assessment of residential living environments for elderly persons. These designs should consider the fundamental principles and techniques of human factors to make certain that residential settings enhance independence and overall quality of life for the independent-living elderly. One way to help designers with this task is to develop a design guidelines handbook. However, to ensure designs are appropriate for the elderly, a prerequisite must be that guidelines are based on sound human factors principles. Creating a design guidelines handbook based in science requires a significant amount of work, in terms of understanding the aging process, developing guidelines, and validating the applicability of the guidelines. Therefore, developing these guideline sets and compiling into a handbook is outside the scope of this thesis. The role of this thesis is to bridge the gap between calling for the development and actually creating the handbook. Specifically, this thesis presents a model to categorize and analyze existing guidelines through use of a research matrix. The matrix provides a human factors based context to view existing work and highlights areas for additional research. This thesis also proposes the expansion of this matrix to be used as a framework for a future handbook. In addition to the above research matrix, a guidelines development methodology is proposed. The methodology is a process that focuses on developing guidelines based on human factors principles. After presenting the case for developing a guidelines handbook, and proposing a methodology to do so, a rationale to implement a handbook is described. This rationale concludes that the injury rates experienced by the elderly may, in some cases, be substantially reduced, by developing designs that accommodate the decreased functional abilities of the elderly. Developing human factors based guidelines and a handbook might ultimately help designers with this task.
