In contrast, reality is subjective. With this in mind, I begin with the position that truth cannot be understood as anything other than a person's reality. In other words, objectivity can only be experienced subjectively. Through my art, I try to explore the objective subjective and subjective objective, and play with this paradox. For this thesis, I specifically discuss how I believe I have found an interesting paradoxical playground through painting an immediate image of what is credibly an objective place, while being cognizant of what felt true to me within that shared place.Item Documentary and the pursuit of truth(Montana State University - Bozeman, College of Arts & Architecture, 2020) Savage, Ariel Lee; Chairperson, Graduate Committee: Cindy StillwellDeveloped as a genre in the 1920s, documentary film has long been considered a bastion for truth and knowledge. With this assumed integrity, however, came an enduring discourse on the deeper complexities of truth and the authorial power of the documentarian. As poststructuralist theory states it is impossible to recognize a universal truth. While it has long been understood that objectivity in documentary is impossible, I argue that documentary can be used instead to understand people. Comparing 'Grey Gardens', 'Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer', and 'Behind the Curve', I analyze the historical context of each film, as well as the subjective techniques utilized to avow the documentarian's construct framing each documentary experience. I apply similar techniques to my documentary, 'Bigfoot and the Citizen Scientist' and further argue that truth is subjective and often murky, and therefore, our documentaries should reflect that.Item Music and ecstatic truth alternate approaches to scoring a documentary film(Montana State University - Bozeman, College of Arts & Architecture, 2019) Collins, William Campbell; Chairperson, Graduate Committee: Theo LipfertMusic has the capacity to quickly and effectively communicate abstract emotional states. In documentary film, music has a powerful impact on how audiences' perceive and empathize with its characters. Despite this, its role can be diminished in comparison to its creative significance. This is often due to the timing of its creation during the production process. In this paper I will discuss two alternate methods of film scoring and how they can yield more authentic musical interpretations of real events. Through the works of various filmmakers and my own experience scoring the short film, 'The Traverse', this paper will discuss how scoring a film early in the production phase, or self-scoring can yield a more authentic display of 'ecstatic truth' in documentary.Item On a heuristic point of view concerning social media news and secondary teachers(Montana State University - Bozeman, College of Education, Health & Human Development, 2018) Johnson, Spencer Theadore; Chairperson, Graduate Committee: Ann EwbankCertain cues used by a consumer of news can trigger heuristics that help determine whether information is credible (Metzger, 2007; Sundar, Knobloch?Westerwick, & Hastall, 2007). This study addresses which cues secondary teachers perceive as effective when assessing the credibility of news on social media. The purpose of this study is to determine how secondary teachers rate cues in order of importance when evaluating the credibility of news obtained in the context of social media. The participants in this study were secondary teachers in a northwest state who teach about online information credibility. A survey adapted from the Kids and Credibility Study (Flanagin, Metzger, & Hartsell, 2010) asked secondary teachers to rate the importance of 23 credibility cues or heuristics commonly found in social media news posts. A principal components analysis revealed three components that are a composite of heuristics reflected in the literature (Beavers et al., 2013). The resulting components were named Endorsement, Reputation & Confirmation, and Low Level Endorsement respectively. By using a sum scores comparison, the composites of heuristics were ordered by perceived level of credibility (DiStefano, Zhu, & Mindrila, 2009; Grace-Martin, 2016). Reputation & Confirmation rated highest on the scale as indicators of credibility, Endorsement ranked second, and Low Level Endorsement ranked last. The results of the study indicate that secondary teachers believe that the most effective heuristics while using low to medium cognitive effort for assessing news credibility are the reputation of the author of the information, along with confirming the information from another source to make a quality judgment on the factual nature of the source. Social endorsements (such as 'likes' and 'shares') on social media play an important role in determining credibility; however, secondary teachers indicate that they perceive Reputation and Consistency to be better at indicating credibility. This study illuminates the role heuristics play in credibility decisions when evaluating news found in a social media setting.
