Item Literary theory, the novel and science media(Montana State University - Bozeman, College of Arts & Architecture, 2008) Goodyer, Meigan Gates; Chairperson, Graduate Committee: Walter Metz.In this paper, the author calls on filmmakers to view science as culturally constructed, and science media as an art form with a specific raison d'être: to explore the culture of science. The purpose of these explorations is to destabilize science's unquestioned hegemony and to reveal new insights on human nature. Literary theory, particularly as it relates to the novel, is shown as a tool for deconstructing and critiquing current science and science media. Defining characteristics of the novel are discussed and offered as the basis for a new model of science media. It is hoped that this new model will allow science media to both hold to its raison d'être and successfully engage audiences.
