In this study a project-based learning unit was implemented in a fourth grade classroom in order to determine how student learning and engagement would be affected. The unit required individual or group research, creation of a project artifact, and a public presentation component. Compared to a traditionally designed unit on the same topic, participants in the project-based learning group showed modest gains in student learning and periods of increased engagement.en
