Abstract
Montana is a largely rural state, and many counties may or may not have healthcare facilities. Rural facilities often lack specialty healthcare providers or services, such as obstetrics; however, pregnant women still live in these areas. Women in these rural populations frequently drive a considerable distance to access obstetric care. Unfortunately, these women may experience an emergent complication requiring quick care, with the rural facility being the only available option. These healthcare facilities may not be adequately equipped to handle obstetrical emergencies. The insufficient education and training in obstetric emergencies at rural facilities will continue to contribute to the high rates of maternal morbidity and mortality. Montana's rural facilities need proper preparation to manage obstetrical emergencies with positive outcomes. Through a literature review, we researched ways to assist rural healthcare facilities in preparing for obstetric emergencies. By collaborating with a regional healthcare facility that offers a higher level of care, including obstetric services, we can bring education and simulated training to these rural facilities to ensure proper preparedness for obstetric emergencies when they arise. This educational opportunity will include critical event team training simulations at the rural facility and incorporate obstetrics Team STEPPS to equip them to successfully treat and stabilize obstetric patients.
