Public Perspectives of the College M in the Custer Gallatin National Forest: A survey of Montana State University alums and residents of Montana

Abstract

This report summarizes findings from surveys of 735 respondents (345 respondents from an Alum survey and 390 respondents from a Panel survey) regarding perceptions, use, and future management of the College M and College M area. Conducted in 2025, the surveys were designed to provide a baseline understanding of public perspectives as Montana State University (MSU) and its partners consider future stewardship, access, education, and visitor experience opportunities associated with the College M area. Overall, respondents expressed strong appreciation for the College M as an iconic symbol of Bozeman and Montana State University, broad support for long-term stewardship and public access, and relatively low levels of concern regarding current conditions at the trailhead, the M area trails, and the College M itself.
