Over the review period, a significant amount of literature has been published documenting the impact of biofilms on engineered and biomedical systems. Reactor systems and analytical techniques have evolved to study the molecular chemistry and microbial ecology within biofilm layers only tens of micrometers thick, and various protocols have been developed to control cell adhesion and biofilm formation.en_US
